Major Wildlife Sanctuary
Rajasthan has several wildlife sanctuaries and parks that are known
worldwide for their diverse variety of flora and fauna. Sanctuaries like
Ranthambore National Park, Sariska National Park, Keoladeo Ghana National
Park, Desert National Park are home to a variety of wildlife including some
rare endangered species.
Eastern Rajasthan
» Ranthambore National Park -
Located in the Sawai Madhopur district, the Ranthambore National Park
was established in the year 1955. In 1973, it came under the Project Tiger
Scheme and was declared a national park in 1980. With an area of 1334 sq.
km., the park houses a range of wildlife including the tiger. It is one of
the best place to spot tigers in the broad day light. Besides, one can also
see chital, leopard, nilgai, chinkara, wild boar, sambars, sloth bear on a
large number. The park is also home to around 270 bird species including
several migratory. Best time to visit is between October to April.

Sariska Tiger Reserve -The tiger reserve was established in the year
1958 and came under the Project Tiger Scheme in 1979. Spanning over an area
of 800 sq. km., the park houses tigers, leopard, chital, four-horned
antelope, wild dogs, chinkara or Indian gazelles etc. November to June is
the ideal time to visit the sanctuary.
» Keoladeo Ghana National Park - It is one of the
best known bird sanctuaries of India located in the Bharatpur district. It
is home to a large variety of bird species including thousands of migratory.
It offers an chance to see a number of migratory birds including some from
Siberia and China. Some important bird species of the park, which can be
spotted easily include cranes, egrets, pelicans, stork, eagles, grey horn
etc. October to March and July to August is the most suitable period to
visit the park.
Western Rajasthan
» Desert National Park - It
was established in 1980 to preserve the desert ecosystem. Due to its close
proximity to the Thar Desert the Desert National Park of Jaisalmer has a
unique wildlife species. Spread over an area of 3150 sq. km., the park
houses a large number of chinkara, blackbuck, desert fox, wolves, snakes and
lizards with a wide variety of rare and exotic birds.
» Gajner Wildlife
Sanctuary - This 10 sq. km. long wildlife sanctuary is located at a
distance of 32 km from Bikaner. It has a good number of wildlife species
including desert cats, desert fox, chinkara and blackbuck. Best time to
visit is between October to March.
Northern Rajasthan
»
Tal Chhapar Wildlife Sanctuary - This 70 sq. km. long wildlife sanctuary
is home to a variety of fauna and avi-fauna. The major wildlife species
include blackbuck, chinkara, desert fox and a variety of resident and
migratory birds. September to March is the best time to visit the sanctuary.
Southern Rajasthan
» Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary - Covering an area of
160 sq. km., it was established in the year 1957 and is located near the
artificial Jaisamand Lake. Sloth bear, leopard, chital, chinkara, wild boar
are the major wildlife of the sanctuary. Besides, a number of bird, both
resident and migratory, and some crocodiles and fish can be spotted here.
November to June is the best time to visit it.
» Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary - Spreading over an
area of 560 sq. km., it is located near the Kumbhalgarh Fort in the Aravalli
range. It harbors animals like sloth bear, leopard, nilgai, sambar, jackal,
wolf. Best time to visit is from October to June.
» Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary - This 290 sq. km.
wildlife sanctuary is located on the Aravalli hills. Established in 1960, it
provides shelter to a large variety of mammals including sambars, wild boar,
chinkara, leopard & sloth bear. March to June is the ideal time to visit
it.
